It started questioning its own existence as a leaf, as well as the nature of trees and the world around it. It wanted to know if what happened to other leaves was the same as what would happen to it, and to the environment as a whole. Do all leaves detach, fall to the ground, and decompose? This is what it had seen happen to other leaves nearby. But all the trees around were of the same kind as its own, so there was no way for it to learn about other types of trees or leaves. Let’s call this leaf Niman—meaning “the thinker.” As time went by, the energy keeping Niman attached to the tree weakened, but Niman’s curiosity only grew stronger. His desire was not for self-preservation but to find answers to his questions. He asked the wise leaves around him, but they had no answers; they too had been rooted in place, unable to move.
